Turkish Bath Party

I recently enjoyed this (mini) photo-essay by Gyula Sopronyi. Thought some of you might, too. I’m still trying to work out why it is I like it so much… perhaps because it has a very dreamy feel to it - kind of a cross between Trent Parke’s Dream Life and the painter, Edward Burne-Jones. Anyway, it’s here.

Jindrich Streit was imprisoned for his work and his negatives confiscated. 5Klatek magazine has a great selection of his work as a downloadable pdf - well worth a look if you’re at a loose end.

This is a photograph I have above my mantelpiece. It’s by a photographer called Steve Harrison who recently died of cancer, in his early sixties. Steve was a friend who I met online about three years ago. He knew then that he was dying but he never gave up the fight. Despite his illness he had a great sense of humour and although we never met in person I became very fond of him. He taught me the importance of ‘getting in closer’.
In the 70s Steve worked as a cameraman for the BBC and also worked on some independent films. His work took him to Bolivia, amongst other places, where he did a wonderful series on the people living there. For me, his finest work was done on the streets around south London, where he was born and lived before moving to Cornwall. Some of this can be seen in his Blurb book at: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/187286

This is a blog for the Ealing Group of LIP. The group has been going since 2005 and the group has its own web site which lets you know what’s gong on and showcases the work of members. The idea for this blog is that anyone in the group can post photo info, reviews, exhibitions, geeky stuff, their own photos or whatever…
