Heritage and the Aesthetics of Rubbish
This weekend I got to visit Brigitte Flock’s exhibition Heritage at the Dominion in Southall. The images are a collection of photographs of the Grand Union Canal taken between Brentford and Southall. Her photos capture a real mix of beauty, everyday life and the ugly side of rubbish strewn along the canal. I found the photos to be quite tender - you could feel Brig’s love for that spot of London close to home. I have cycled or walked along there quite a few times so it’s fascinating to see it through someone else’s eye. It’s Brig’s first solo exhibition and she has done a great job of grouping the photos into similar themes and tones on each panel - a natural curator!
The Ealing Gazette had some photos in and a review of the exhibition grand scale of the lens last week.

Along with the publicity image which has such dramatic light, one of my favourite photos (somewhat perversely) was this burnt out upside down van. I felt marginally bad that I liked it so much but there’s no accounting for taste! Brig called it an example of the ‘aesthetics of rubbish’. How did it get there and to be upside down? Intriguing… Anyway the exhibition is open until March 29 - make sure you get along to see it. Details are on the exhibition page.
